This page guides you through the concepts of history and discussion postings. These are options you have inside a wiki. Every wiki holds the space for history on all the changes you have made or your students make. The discussion allows you to begin a conversation about a topic, with a written thread. You also have access to email messages inside the wiki. Very powerful tool, right?
A few Things to Keep in Mind
The wiki account you created to begin to use the wiki pages is where all your wiki pages will be hosted. You have a lot of space. In my account for example, I host many wikis (see the pictures on the side). Each wiki is a new project and can live as a site you open to all, a site you keep private and a site you share with your students. It is all up to you.
Once you set a specific wiki for a specific project, inside that wiki you have access to the discussion and history tools. The history tool lets you see all the changes made since the wiki was created, and by whom. So if you liked something in an older version you could restore that version and save it again. The history also lets you see who accessed the wiki and for how long they were on this or that page. If these are your students, this is a way to check on what they have done and what they seem to access more often in terms of resources.
The discussion tab lets you and your users open discussion topics and share them with each other or with selected users. It creates written threads to build on, sharing ideas and comments. This is also a very powerful option in a wiki. You can also use the email you automatically gain by opening a wiki account. It can forward messages to your own email account (like your gmail or hotmail) and you can go to your wiki and see who wrote to you and respond.
It is important that you understand that once you set a wiki up, especially if it is a collaborative project, that you must check on it frequently, until the project is completed. This helps you get organized in advance and plan for the time it will take you to supervise the project using the wiki.
